About The Book

Picture of the book

II was inspired to write and in bits and pieces, the past merged with the present.

Childhood memories surfaced and stories of madness and mayhem working in psychiatry took shape.  Some humorous, others tragic.  Little separated the mentally ill from those who took care of them.

Stories of fighting addictive patterns and looking outside for what could be found within. Stories of a loving marriage fraught with difference.

Stories of spirituality and looking for God in the face of teachers. Lessons from the yoga mat and the meditation cushion where pearls of wisdom could be found.

Tales from herbal school and learning from the land and then following a call to cross the country and build the House of All.  This memoir comes from blogs, memories and transmissions.

This story begins with a little girl in a lunch line in elementary school with a woman who held her hand and handed her a book on dragons. A woman who voiced an important lesson that life needs to be built with a strong foundation.  A foundation where strength and fortitude can be found.

And then there is a letter from her older girl self to her boyfriend.  A letter looking for a mate and someone to play with.  A letter that expressed quirky wishes that were ahead of its time. It takes many years and experiences for this young adult to come to realize that she isn’t misaligned or broken, her wishes can be built one brick at a time, and she can eventually live fully the life that is uniquely conscribed for her.

Why I Offer Gluten-Free Bread: A Journey from Mind to Gut

I started doing DNA and food testing with my clients, and what I discovered was profound: many of their mental health challenges could be controlled or significantly improved simply by changing what they ate.

This realization wasn’t just for them. I found that my own mind and body could improve by changing my diet. I carry the celiac gene and test positive for gluten intolerance. Once I eliminated gluten, my inflamed bowel issues resolved, and one of my brothers experienced similar improvements.

Fast forward to my new home in South Carolina—I love it here! But I missed the amazing gluten-free bread I used to buy at the farmer’s market in Asheville. So, I thought: why not make my own?

Ayurveda: Finding Balance in a Connected World

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old practice from India that sees all life as interconnected and sharing the same energy. It teaches that true well-being comes from finding balance within the natural imbalances of who we are.

We are all unique, made from the elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth. Some of us have more of one, two, or three elements than others. Just like nature, we also have qualities based on opposites: some are naturally warmer, others cooler; some more still, others more moving and flowing (chala); some lighter, others heavier.

Your prakruti (constitution) can be identified based on these qualities and elements. The goal is to balance this constitution by bringing in opposite elements or qualities. For example, if you tend to be cold, we bring in warmth. If you feel heavy, we introduce lightness. If you’re moving a lot (like during a cross-country flight), we add grounding energy.

Ayurveda also looks at the mind, using the concepts of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. In our busy, distracted world, we aim for a Sattva state—one of clarity and peace. We often use quick fixes (tamasic means) like drugs, alcohol, or endless media to calm the mind, especially before sleep. While sleep is vital, dulling the brain rarely leads to true balance.

This is an overview of Ayurveda. To learn more, book a consultation to discover your vata, pitta, or kapha nature and any imbalances. We’ll help you bring more stability to your mind and body.
